Founded in March 1988, as a Scientific Society of the Department of Information Technology, Ministry of Communications and InformationTechnology, Government of India, the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC), is mainly an R & D institution involved in the design, development and deployment of advanced Information Technology (IT) based solutions. Over a decade since inception, C-DAC has developed and supplied a variety of high performance similar computers, called as the PARAM series of supercomputers. C-DAC's development functions in this area have been task oriented and determined by its mission goals, both in technology and application developments. C-DAC, as an impact of its initiating developments, developed the Graphics and Intelligence based Script Technology, with a sight to expand the benefits of InformationTechnology to the vast and varied multilingualpopulation of India. Apply of the GIST variety of software and hardware products has led to the propagation of the use of computers and their applications in all main Indian languages, with hundreds of thousand of users nationwide.
Over the years, C-DAC has diversified its activities to address requirements in various areas, therefore, their expertise also extends to other advanced areas of Information Technology, enabling IT based solutions in areas like financial and capital market simulation and modeling, network and internet software, healthcare, real time systems, eGovernance, data warehousing, digital library, artificial intelligence and natural language processing.As a part of its development activities C-DAC has been rewarded a number of sponsored R & D projects, by the Department of InformationTechnology, Department of Official Language (DOL), Department of Science and Technology (DST), Department of Scientific and Industrial Research (DSIR), Department of Culture, Department of Biotechnology etc. As part of the authorization given to C-DAC to generate manpower to address the growing demand for trained human recourses extremely fast moving sector of InformationTechnology, C-DAC established its Advanced Computing Training School (ACTS). C-DAC, presently proposes a variety of course options in Software technologies, Enterprise System Management, Geomatics, VLSI designs, Digital Multimedia, and the Programme for Advancing Computer Education.
C-DAC's Advanced Computing Training School (ACTS) is dedicated to creating high quality manpower for C-DAC in particular and the IT industry in general through the designing and delivering various courses. The courses are offered through a network of 100 plus Authorized Training Centres in India, besides the C-DAC's own centers in Pune, Delhi, Hyderabad & Bangalore. More than 30,000 students pass out every year from these courses. They are today successful employees of many Multinational and Premier Indian IT companies, and many of them have also become successful entrepreneurs also.

New courses in the area of Geomatics, Enterprise System Management (ESM), and Embedded Systems are also being offered. ACTS also conducts specially designed courses for corporate bodies. The National Multimedia Resource Centre (NMRC) of C-DAC is busy in the development of tools and templates for fast and suitable designing of multimedia titles and web satisfied both for professionals and entrepreneurs who like to adopt multimedia as their profession.
C-DAC's National PARAM Supercomputing Facility (NPSF) located in Pune houses its latest and most powerful PARAM 10000, a 100 Gigaflop peak computing power Supercomputer. It is being used by C-DAC's own scientific and business applications development team and researchers and institutions all over the country.
