Location/Physical Characteristics of NDA The 8300 acre estate sprawling over the open on the left of the Mutha river (Khadakwasla Lake) was donated by Bombay State. The backbone of the Estate was the Dudhanvadi plateau. Visiting NDA Pune is well connected with all parts of India by Rail, Road and Air. When at Pune, NDA Khadakwasla is connected only by road and is 24 Kms from Pune Railway Station. City buses ply to NDA at fairly frequent rate from Deccan Gymkhana and Pune Railway Station. Auto rickshaws are also available, and if one has own conveyance i.e. car, jeep etc one can easily come to NDA. The road to NDA is free from dust, noise and pollution. Hence drive to NDA is convenient and comfortable. How to Join NDA Admission Details Eligibility Criteria XII Class / Equivalent passed certificate conducted by State Board / Universities. Candidate appearing for above examination can also apply. Unmarried male candidates only Age between 16 1/2 to 19 years Nationality - A candidate must be either: A citizen of India, or A subject of Bhutan, or A subject of Nepal, or A Tibetan refugee who came over to India before 1st January, 1962, with the intention of permanently settling in India, or A person of Indian origin who has migrated from Pakistan, Burma, Sri Lanka, the East African countries of Kenya, Uganda, United Republic of Tanzania (formerly Tanganyika and Zambia, Malawi, Zaire and Ethiopia and Vietnam, with the intention of permanently setting in India) Provided that a candidate belonging to categories (ii), (iii), (iv) and (v) above shall be a person in whose favour a certificate of eligibility has been issued by the Government of India. Certificate of eligibility will not, however, be necessary in the case of candidates who are Gorkha subjects of Nepal. Admission Form About a year before the commencement of a Course, a brief notice appears in the leading daily newspapers and a detailed notification in the Government of India Gazette, offering about the entrance examination to be held by the UPSC six months later at Agartala, Ahmedabad, Aizwal, Allahabad, Bangalore, Bareilly, Bhopal, Mumbai, Calcutta, Chandigarh, Cochin, Cuttack, Delhi, Dharwar, Dispur (Guwahati), Gangtok, Hyderabad, Imphal, Itanagar, Jaipur, Jammu, Jorhat, Kavaratti (Lakshadweep), Kohima, Lucknow, Madras, Madurai, Nagpur, Panji (Goa), Patna, Port Blair, Raipur, Sambalpur, Shillong, Shimla, Srinagar, Tirupati, Trivandrum, Udaipur and Vishakhapatnam. How to Apply A candidate seeking admission to the examination must apply to the Secretary, Union Public Service Commission, Dholpur, House, New Delhi-110011, on the application form published in newspapers. The candidates may utilise the original form published in newspapers or in "Employment News" and fill up the columns in their own handwriting with ball-point pen. They may also use the application form and the Attendance Sheet neatly typewritten on white paper (foolscap size) in double space typed on only one side of th,e paper. There is no objection to candidates using printed/Application Form and Attendance Sheet, if available, from private agencies as long as the format is exactly the same as published in the advertisement. Candidates who have appeared for the previous examinations will not be considered. The envelope containing the application should be superscribed in bold letters as "APPLICATION FOR NATIONAL ACADEMY EXAMINATION" . Selection Procedure The process of selecting cadets for the National Defence Academy is split into three phases : A written examination held by the Union Public Service Commission. An interview by the Service Selection Board to assess a candidate's officer potentialities ( Intelligence and personality test ). A medical examination by a Service Medical Board. The vision of Lord Mountbatten in consonance with the sustained impetus and groundwork provided by Field Marshal Sir Claude J Auchinlek, C-in-C in India laid the conceptual foundation for a Joint Services Military Academy modeled on the lines of the US WestPoint. In 1941, Lord Linlithgow, the then Viceroy of India had received a gift of a hundred thousand pounds from a grateful Sudanese Government for building a suitable war memorial in recognition of the sacrifices of the Indian troops in the liberation of Sudan in the North African Campaign during the World War II. A committee headed by Field Marshal Sir Claude J Auchinlek, after extensive studying of various Military academies around the world, submitted its recommendations to the Government in December 1946. After independence of India in August 1947, this report was referred to the Chiefs of Staff Committee. Their suggestion for the formation of an interim Junior Inter Services Wing at the Indian Military Academy, Dehradun was then implemented. A simultaneous action plan to commission a permanent war academy at Khadakwasla, Pune was also commenced and the foundation stone was laid by the first Prime Minister of India, Pt Jawaharlal Nehru on 06 October, 1949. On 1 January 1949, the Armed Forces Academy having its Military wing, now called the Indian Military Academy and the Joint Services Wing were commissioned. After two years of training at the JSW, Army cadets went on to the Military wing for a further two-year pre-commission training. The Naval and the Air force cadets were sent to Dartmouth and Cranwell in UK for advanced training. On 07 December 1954, the interim process crystallised with the commissioning of the National Defence Academy. Formal inauguration of the Academy took place on 16 January 1955. Why Khadakwasla? The National Defence Academy is located south-west of Pune City and north-west of Khadakwasla Lake on 7015 acres of land, out of the 8022 acres donated by the Government of the erstwhile Bombay State. The other suggested sites were Bombay (particularly Marve), Bangalore, Dehradun, Belgaum, Bhopal, Deolali, Jabalpur, Nasik, Puri, Secunderabad and Vizag. 'HMS Angostura' : mock landing ship at khadakwasla lake Pune was ultimately chosen after careful deliberations for its salubrious climatic conditions, suitability of terrain for military training, proximity to the Arabian Sea, existence of an operational airfield at Lohegaon, vicinity of military establishments and the presence of a lake nearby. The existence of a combined training centre and the 'mock' landing ship, HMS Angostura on the north bank of the Khadakwasla lake lent additional leverage to the claims of Khadakwasla over other contenders for being chosen as the site for the prestigious NDA. It is befitting that the NDA is located in the happy hunting ground of the legendary Shivaji, with the daunting Sinhagad Fort as a panoramic backdrop. 30 May 1959 : HE Rahmatullah Abdulla, Ambassador of Sudan, during his formal address at the unveiling ceremony of Sudan Block. Military Hospital at NDA BRIEF HISTORY : Originally called " NIZAM's HOSPITAL " Military Hospital Khadakwasla originated as a 15 bedded Section Hospital of Military Hospital Poona. It was expanded to 50 bed hospital on 01 Sep 1959. The present modernised hospital caters to a patient intake of 98.
