Gokhale Institute of Politics and Economics



The Gokhale Institute of Politics and Economicsis one of the most renowned institutes foreconomics teaching and research in the country. Since its establishment in the year 1940, it has been regarded as one of the premier institutes, devoted to advanced research in this field. Despite its status, chiefly, as an institute for research, the University of Bombay has provided its MA and PhD courses with due recognition, from the very day of its establishment. 
The Gokhale Institute has been an essential element of the University of Pune since it came into being in the year 1949. The GIPE was chosen by the UGC or the University Grants Commission as a Centre for Advanced Study inEconomics after its significant contribution to research in Agricultural Economics was recognised. The GIPE is situated in the premises of the Servants of India Society, which was set up in the year 1905 by the great Indian nationalist leader Gopal Krishna Gokhale.
The Gokhale Institute of Politics and Economics has been declared by the Government of India as ‘Deemed to be a University’, taking into consideration its current professional success and bright future.

Courses Offered by the University





COURSES
M.A 

The MA course at Gokhale Institute of Politics and Economics is a two year program that comprises of four semesters. There are six compulsory subjects and twelve optional subjects. Students from diverse academic backgrounds can select this course.

Selection: Students will be chosen according to the marks they have secured in the entrance examination on subjects like analytical ability, knowledge in basics of economics, knowledge of statistics and mathematics. 
Eligibility: Students wishing to appear for the examination must have a minimum of 50% marks in their graduation. The eligibility for SC/ST students is 45%.
PhD

Students can attain a PhD in Economics, Population studies and Sociology.

Eligibility: Students need to have secured 55% marks in their Master's degree to be eligible to apply for this course.
