Law is as system of rules and regulations generally enforced by a set of institutions. It affects politics, economics and society in various ways. Lawyers give their clients advice about their legal rights, duties and represent them in court.

An aspiring lawyer must be certified by the regulating body i.e. law college, before undertaking his practice. This usually takes a two or three year programme at a universityfaculty of law or a law school earning the student a Bachelor of Law, a Bachelor of Civil Law or a Juries Doctor degree. Higher degrees are like Master of Law, a Master of Legal studies and Doctor of Law are also available. A nation-wide survey of the top 10 colleges in the country was observed by Gallup Company, under the arts, science, commerce, engineering, medicine and law streams. According to this survey, when it comes to preparing the future legal professionals of the country, Pune achieves the most with not just one but two law colleges from the city on the list - Symbiosis Society's Law College on the fifth rank and Indian Law Society’s Law College at the ninth rank.

In Pune there are several law colleges, among them Indian Law Society is the oldest, which was founded in 1923 as a public charitable trust. The Indian Law Society founded the Law College in 1924 which has since then established itself as a premier institute for legal studies in India. In 2004 the ILS law college was accredited the A+ level by NAAC. Student’s placements for the last few years have been over 90%, marking ILS the most favored destination for legal education in India.

The Department of Law at Pune University was established in 1965. It has been rated by the UGC as one of the top five law departments in the country because of its academic excellence, research outputs and remarkable contribution to the development of legal education in India. In 1975 the department changed to a full time LL.M course.

The educational qualification for admission to these courses is as follows.

1. For BSL-LLB- XII or equivalent examination with minimum 40% marks.
2. For LL.B- In deciding whether to admit an applicant the College takes into account factors such as academic ability and intellectual maturity, and will require a Bachelors degree in any stream of Arts, Science o r Commerce or any other faculty of a recognized University with minimum of 45% marks in the Bachelor degree Programme. Admissions are based on merit.
   

Specializations:
1. Diplomain Taxation Laws(D.T.L)- Eligibility for admission requires the candidate to be a graduate of any faculty of any University whose degree is recognised to be equivalent to the corresponding degrees of Pune University.

2. Masters Degree in Labour Law & Labour Welfare ( M.L.L. & L.W)- Acandidate applying for the M.L.L. programme should be a graduate in any faculty from a recognised University and should have obtained a minimum of 40% marks in the qualifying examination.
